There are various ways to do an internship to become a divemaster . Which one is best for you depends on your personal situation and your future plans.
First of all, you should be clear about whether you want to work as a diving instructor later on or whether you just want to do the course for fun. If you don’t have much time and/or don’t plan to work regularly as a diving instructor in the future, you can book the course at many diving schools as normal and complete it in a relatively short time, depending on your previous training.
If you want to work regularly as a diving instructor later on, training as part of an internship in return for cooperation is often the better choice.
When it comes to training versus working, it also depends on the dive center where you work. Unfortunately, there are always dive centers that are only looking for cheap labor for the high season. Often they even lure you in with a quick training course in 2-3 months and a little pocket money.
We can only warn against such diving schools! Nobody has anything to give away. The focus here is not usually on diving and your training. You will often be assigned to other tasks such as office work, filling tanks, cleaning or washing equipment.
The training program at Ocean Trek normally lasts 6 months. Before you start your training with us, we normally recommend a trial week. This allows us to get to know each other and gives you a first impression of the work of a diving instructor. Our trainees often only take a week’s vacation on Tenerife and then start their training at a later date.
With us, training in exchange for cooperation means that we cover all the training costs from Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver to Divemaster. You only need to pay your course material and PADI Divemaster fees. You can expect to pay around €400 for all courses together. As a prospective diving instructor, you should of course also gradually acquire your own equipment. As a diving center, we get equipment very cheaply and would pass it on to you at cost price. For a complete set of equipment including suit, buoyancy jacket, regulator, shoes, mask, fins and dive computer, for example, you can expect to pay around €800. You should also be able to support yourself during this time.
Ocean Trek has a staff apartment near the base. Depending on whether places are available, it is possible to live there for 280€ per month together with our other diving instructors.
The training we offer in return for cooperation is much more extensive than at most diving schools. We really prepare you for your job as a diving instructor. As a rule, you will make around 200-300 dives during this time. You will get a lot of practice in dealing with diving students and diving courses and learn how to organize and lead diving trips independently.
You will also learn how to look after and maintain equipment and, of course, how a diving center works. Divemasters who have completed their training with us can normally work in any diving center worldwide without any problems. We are also often happy to take on divemasters that we have trained ourselves.
For example, there are also diving schools (“academies”, “colleges”) that specialize in the training of diving instructors. Here the courses are usually offered for a fee. In most cases, you save time.
However, the diving instructor candidates usually only train with each other, often always at the same dive site. Once you have completed your training, you will mainly have the basic theoretical knowledge. Practical experience, such as training real students or leading diving groups, is something you will hardly get.
Due to a lack of professional experience, divemasters who have completed their training in a short period of time for a fee are naturally not so sought-after as employees at other diving schools.
Of course, we also train Divemasters for a fee. The training would take about 4-8 weeks, depending on your previous training. Without any previous training it costs 2.500.-€ incl. course material PADI diving license fee and includes approx. 60-80 dives. If you already have diving experience and diving certificates, this can be taken into account.
Of course, we will also try to train you as well as possible during this course. Together with our experienced diving instructors, you will learn how to give diving courses and lead diving groups at various dive sites.
