PADI Open Water Diver Course in Tenerife
– Get Your Scuba Diving Certification
Would you like to learn scuba diving and discover the underwater world with a certified dive buddy? The PADI Open Water Diver course in Tenerife is your first step towards becoming an internationally recognised certified scuba diver.
At Ocean Trek in Costa Adeje, we teach in exceptionally small groups, with a maximum of two students per instructor. As a PADI 5-Star Dive Centre with experience dating back to 1996, we focus on personal attention, thorough training and a relaxed learning environment.
Thanks to our small groups, you can usually complete the practical training in just two days. You can study the theory online before arriving in Tenerife.
What Can You Do With a PADI Open Water Diver Certification?
Once you successfully complete the course, you will receive your internationally recognised PADI Open Water Diver certification.
This qualifies you to dive with another appropriately qualified diver, without direct instructor supervision, to a maximum depth of 18 metres, within the limits of your training, experience and local diving conditions.
Your certification is recognised by dive centres worldwide, opening the door to exciting underwater adventures wherever your travels take you.
PADI eLearning – Complete Your Theory Before Your Holiday
To make the most of your time in Tenerife, you can complete the theoretical part of your training through PADI eLearning before you arrive.
Study from home, at your own pace and whenever it suits you. You can also complete your final theory exam online before travelling to Tenerife.
This means that once you arrive, we can spend more time doing what you came for: scuba diving in the ocean.
Of course, we will review any questions and make sure you are fully prepared before starting your practical training.
How Does the PADI Open Water Diver Course Work?
Your practical training includes confined-water exercises and four open-water training dives.
Step 1: Equipment Familiarisation and Basic Skills
First, you will learn how to use your scuba equipment and practise the essential skills needed to dive safely and comfortably.
These include breathing through your regulator, clearing your mask, controlling your buoyancy and communicating underwater.
Your instructor will explain and demonstrate each exercise carefully, giving you time to practise until you feel confident.
Step 2: Four Open-Water Dives in the Atlantic Ocean
Next, you will put your new skills into practice during four open-water dives under the supervision of your instructor.
You will gradually gain confidence, improve your diving techniques and become more comfortable underwater.
Along the way, you can discover Tenerife’s fascinating marine environment, including volcanic rock formations, schools of fish and other marine life.
We select our dive sites according to sea and weather conditions and the requirements of your training.
Get Certified With Just Two Days of Practical Training
Because we teach a maximum of two students per instructor, we can adapt the pace of the course to your individual progress.
As a result, the practical part of your PADI Open Water Diver course can usually be completed in just two days, provided you have prepared the theory in advance and successfully meet all the required training standards.
We recommend keeping a third day available as a backup. This gives us flexibility if you need extra time for an exercise or if sea conditions require a change of plans.
If you successfully complete your certification in two days, you can use that extra day to enjoy additional recreational dives and discover more of Tenerife’s underwater world.

What Are the Requirements for the PADI Open Water Diver Course?
You should have basic swimming skills and feel comfortable in the water.
The minimum age for the PADI Open Water Diver programme is 10. Students aged 10 to 14 receive a PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification upon successful completion, with age-specific diving restrictions.
Before starting the course, you must complete a medical questionnaire. Depending on your answers, medical clearance from a physician may be required.
You will also need to complete the required swimming and water-comfort assessments. We will be happy to explain these requirements before you book.
How Long Should You Wait Before Flying After the Course?
If you plan to complete your scuba certification during your Tenerife holiday, remember to consider your return flight.
After multiple dives or diving over several days, DAN (Divers Alert Network) recommends waiting at least 18 hours before flying. A longer interval provides an additional margin of safety.
At Ocean Trek, we recommend allowing at least 24 hours between your last dive and your flight whenever possible.
This gives you time to finish your course without having to rush your travel plans.
